Composition Students Close 2011 Concert Season
The young composers of the Department's composition program closed the 2010-2011 season with a full day of activities hearing the music and gaining the insight of visiting composer N. Lincoln Hanks (91). Dr. Hanks, who teaches theory and composition at Pepperdine Univeristy, visited the April 27 meeting of the student chapter of the Society of Composers, Incorporated. He spoke about his oratorioTegel Passion, a work depicting the final moments of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's life.
For the conclusion of the student composition recital that evening, Dr. Jerome Reed performed Hanks' Prayers and Meditations. The work is a set of four tone poems for solo piano based on mystic texts by the Thirteenth Century Cistercian nun Mechtild of Magdeburg and dedicated to the memory of Hanks' friend (and former Lipscomb professor) Dr. Mary Morris.
Dr. Jerome Reed directs the composition program; he and Dr. Sally Reid sponsor the student chapter of SCI.

During the spring semester, ten students have presented degree recitals for faculty and peers. In keeping with degree requirements, each student completing a music program must present a recital in his or her major performance medium. Students in performance programs present recitals during their junior and senior years; music education students present only a senior recital. Most recitals feature both solo and collaborative work requiring months of practice, memorization, and refining. Also, before performance night with its excited audience of family and friends, each musician has been required to present their program before the music faculty in a pre-recital hearing.
The teaching studios of Dr. Dan Lochrie, Ms. Jean Miller, Dr. Jerome Reed, Ms. Patricia Roberts, Mr. Radu Rusu, and Dr. Carolyn Treybig were represented in recital this semester. We congratulate the following students on their excellent performances:
Mallory Broadfoot, voice, senior music education recital
Jade Calaway, voice, senior performance recital (graduating)

Festival of Women Composers Performs Faculty Work
Dr. Sally Reid, chair of the Department of Music, recently attended the Festival of Women Composers held at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, March 17-20. Dr. Reid attended a performance of her original composition, Three Triflesfor saxophone and percussion, on March 20. She also presented a lecture, “Writing Original Music for Historical Documentaries,” describing much of what she has learned about the process during her rather extensive work in this area of composition. In addition to these activities, Dr. Reid served as a session chair during the conference.
Vocal Students Gain Master Class Experience
The spring semester has provided several master class opportunities, and on March 22 three vocal students were able to participate in a session with Jonathan Carle. Mr. Carle is a local performer and teacher who has been a part of the Young American Artists Program of the Glimmerglass Opera, an internationally known summer music festival. Kirk Averitt, a sophomore music education major, Chris Carney, a freshman performance major, and Liz Bunnell, a sophomore performance major, each presented an art song or aria, then were coached in interpretive and technical points in the open session by Mr. Carle. He also talked with the vocal students about the importance of gaining performing experience through young artist programs.
New Steinway Delivered for McMeen/Collins
In February, a new Steinway D (a nine-foot grand) was delivered to the McMeen Music Center for use in the Arnold Rehearsal Hall and in Collins Alumni Auditorium. The acquisition of this instrument was the culmination of more than a year of fundraising efforts. We are especially grateful for the generous gifts of donors and supporters who responded to the need for placing a first-class performance instrument in the newly renovated auditorium and music center. This is a major milestone in Lipscomb's Steinway initiative to become an all-Steinway school.
Students Meet Internationally Recognized Composer
Student composers enjoyed an evening at the symphony on January 23, as they heard Krzysztof Penderecki's "Resurrection" Concerto for piano conducted by the composer. Their special evening continued after the concert, as Carolyn Wann Bailey, the Department's violin teacher and principal second violin for the Nashville Symphony, had arranged for the group to meet the composer. Pictured at left are Maestro Penderecki (center) with members of the student chapter of the Society of Composers, Incorporated, and sponsors Dr. Sally Reid and Dr. Jerome Reed.
